Whether you are in HC or SC, avoiding death is utmost important in POE. In HC, death means the end of all what you are trying to achieve - staying alive. In SC, it means 10% xp lost, which translates into many hours of playing time.
1. by SKILLS. or ESCAPE SKILLS.
- Shield Charge.
If using shield, this is an option. Can only go straight line.
- Leap Slam.
Can be used with many melee weapons. One of many favorite.
- Whirling Blades.
Same like Shield Charge, only go straight line. Need sword, claw or dagger.
- Lightning Warp.
slow. need support gems to make it better.
- Smoke Mines.
If you learn to use it. I dont like it.
- Run Speed.
get some, by passives, or on shoes. be mobile.
- Log Out.
Either to Character screen by pressing ESC button and out, or Alt+F4. Learn it. Use it.
2. by Distraction. or TOTEMS.
- any totem is good as distraction. for pure decoy there is Decoy Totem.
- zombies, spectres also can be a good distraction.
- animate guardian, weapons.
- conversion trap. can use with increase duration, and multitraps.
- one of old time favorite : Spell Totem + Summon Skeletons.
3. by Scouting.
- plant any totem ahead. or cast Summon Skeleton.
4. by LAYER of HP.
- Mind Over Matter. keystone or chest armor. using some mana for health.
- Energy Shield. use aura Discipline, or some ES gear.
- having high HP.
5. by PROTECTION / Mitigation
- Block. and Spell Block.
The best mitigation.
- Avoidance/Evasion.
very good to avoid a streak of hits, especially big hits. also good against crit hit.
coupled with Arrow Dodging keystone for very good protection against projectile attacks.
- Dodge. and Spell Dodge
comes with Acrobatics/Phase keystone, and some uniques.
- High Armor
very good against many small hits. only works on physical attacks.
- Arctic Armor.
need high mana regen. can coupled with high armor for more protection.
- Immortal Call.
use with cwdt. or cast manually. need EC for longer duration.
- Endurance Charge.
provide flat physical damage reduction and extra resist.
6. keeping safe DISTANCE.
- spell casters, bow/wand users can attack from safe distance (from melee enemies).
- can use totem and traps as well.
- use ESCAPE skills to keep distance.
7. use DEFENSIVE Skills(Gems).
- Cast When Damage Taken.
most popular auto defense. CWDT+EC+ID+IC.
- Molten Shell.
some extra armor. and damage.
- Auras.
Grace, Determination, Purities..
- Cast When Stunned.
not as reliable as cwdt, with the 50~% chance to proc. however could save your skin from those big hits that stun, or charging rhoas. I use with Frost Walls.
- Enduring Cry.
for getting Endurance Charges.
- Curses.
all Marks, Temporal Chains, Enfeeble,
- Blind
blind greatly reduce chance to be hit by physical attacks from enemies affected by it. you can use Blind gem/skill or get Blind from unique items.
8. use OFFENSIVE Skills.
- Glacial Hammer.
will chill and freeze enemies.
- Dominating Blow.
will convert defeated enemies into your ally.
- Heavy Strike.
will knock back and (maybe) stun enemies.
- whatever skills that incapacitate enemies.
Freeze, Stun, err what else?
9. RESISTANCES,
max it.
10. Reduce RISK
- Ask higher level players to kill the boss for you.
- bring appropriate resist item, normally rings, to swap on certain boss/quest. for example, against Hailrake dan Merveil you use Cold Resist rings to max your cold resist. against Lightning Strike dude in act 2 you max your lightning resist. etc.
- upgrade your gear. normally when playing melee you want to upgrade your weapons so you kill faster.
